Political Thought, Economics, and Strategy (PES) aims to broaden the horizons of students who routinely spend most of their year learning and researching exclusively in their own disciplines. PES, in contrast, offers seminars and lectures that give our fellows the opportunity to explore the philosophical foundations of republicanism both ancient and modern, as well as contemporary political conservatism and realist thought.

The Jewish State: Democracy, Freedom, and Virtue grapples with the philosophical foundations of liberal democracy and examines the variety of daunting civic dilemmas that Israel faces as the nation state of the Jewish people. Having read Aristotle, Locke and Madison, our fellows will consider the relation between Zionism, Judaism, and liberal democracy. This main course of study will be supplemented by special lectures on politics, law, economics, foreign policy, and national security.
